Cura Hub
Cura Hub, a Bluetooth medical device, is designed to bring virtual medical visits to life, particularly for patients aged 65+ in rural areas. By integrating with various medical devices, the hub allows doctors to take vital readings remotely, enabling regular check-ups without the need for lengthy travel.
Role & Responsibilities
As the lead UX/UI designer, leading a team of contracted designers, I was responsible for the user experience and interface design for the hub. Collaborating with a project manager and industrial designer, we worked using agile methodology, with weekly sprints, to build both the physical hub and its functionality.
Research & Discovery
We developed several personas reflecting the potential users, examining general device usage, frustrations, health diagnoses, and regular medical regimen needs. A detailed customer journey map highlighted bright spots and pain points, from introduction to the brand/product, to unboxing, setup, and using the hub itself.

Design Process
Our design approach prioritized the varied needs of elderly patients, from tech-savvy to those requiring step-by-step guidance. Ideation included screen sketches and prototypes, allowing patients to either take all vitals automatically or opt for detailed instructions. We created various user flows, including a product journey map.
Challenges and Solutions:
Designing for an older demographic presented unique challenges, requiring empathetic solutions tailored to varying technical abilities. The option to provide either automated vital readings or guided instructions ensured the hub catered to diverse user needs. An unexpected acquisition during the project required us to transfer our work to an in-house team, maintaining the project's momentum and integrity.
Outcome and Impact:
Although the project's completion was transferred, our team successfully created prototypes for the physical hub and its functionality. The project exemplifies a pioneering approach to virtual healthcare, breaking down barriers for elderly patients in rural areas, and facilitating vital regular check-ins without the burden of travel.
Learnings and Reflections:
The Cura Hub project highlighted the importance of user-centric design, particularly for diverse and potentially vulnerable user groups. The insights gained from the customer journey, personas, and iterative design process provided valuable lessons in empathy, flexibility, and collaboration.
